Loteprednol (Lotepred Eye Drops)

Uses

Loteprednol eye drops is used in the treatment of inflammatory and allergic conditions of the superficial layers of the eye, such as allergic conjunctivitis (allergic itching and redness of the whites of the eye, with tearing), conjunctivitis that occurs as part of acne rosacea (persistent redness over the areas of the face and nose), superficial punctate keratitis (inflammation of cornea), iritis (Inflammation of the interior eye structures), cyclitis (inflammation of cilliary body of the eye). It is also used in the treatment of postoperative Inflammation of the eye after the eye surgery.

How it works?

Loteprednol belongs to a class of medication called as ophthalmic corticost**d. The exact mechanism of action is not known. They are thought to induce certain proteins (phospholipase A 2 inhibitory proteins) which inhibit the formation of other compounds like prostaglandin and leukotrienes which promote inflammation. As a result, the redness, swelling, and itching is relieved at the site of administration.
