WHAT VITAFOL IS USED FOR?

It is used to treat,
nFolate deficiency anaemia caused by poor diet, poor absorption of food
nPrevent babies born with neural tube defects such as spina bifida
n
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS:
n
TALK TO DOCTOR
n
Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, if you:
nAre allergic to VITAFOL or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
nHave pernicious anaemia (a form of anaemia caused by lack of vitamin B12) or another condition caused by vitamin B12 deficiency
nHave a malignant disease
nHave a folate dependent tumour
nHave any disease that reduces the amount of vitamin B12 in the body

PREGNANCY & BREAST FEEDING
n
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or planning to have baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
n

CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS
n
The dosage will be adjusted by the doctor according to the child?s age or weight
n
n
DRIVING & USING MACHINES
n
VITAFOL doesn?t have any effect on driving and using machines
n
n
INTERACTIONS:
n
Tell your doctor if you are taking:
nPhenytoin, phenobarbital and primidone used to treat epilepsy
nChloramphenicol and co-trimoxazole used to treat infections
nSulfasalazine used to treat ulcerative colitis, Crohn?s disease or rheumatoid arthritis
nMethotrexate used to treat Crohn?s disease, psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis

DIRECTIONS & FOR USE:
n
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
nSwallow this medicine with a glass of water
nFor Adults and elderly
nTo treat folate deficiency anaemia – 5mg a day for 4 months, which may be increased up to a maximum of 15mg a day
nTo prevent neural tube defects in babies, where women are at risk of having an affected child – 5mg a day started before conception and continued throughout the first three months
nTo treat folate deficiency during pregnancy – 5mg a day continued to birth
nFor Children
n
nTo treat folate deficiency anaemia – Children 1-18 years old 5mg a day for 4 months
nThe maintenance dose is 5mg every 1-7 days
n
nIf you take more VITAFOL
n
nIf you have accidentally taken more than the prescribed dose, contact your doctor or nearest casuality
n
nIf you forget to take VITAFOL
n
nIf you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember
nDo not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose
n
nIf you stop taking VITAFOL
n
nDo not stop VITAFOL until your doctor tell you to do so
n
STORAGE:
n
Keep out of reach of children
nStore at room temperature (15-25°C)
nDo not use this medicine after the expiry date
